Alexis Godillot was born March 15, 1816 in Besançon and died April 13, 1893 in Paris 16 e, was a French Entrepeneur and Manufacturer, best known for military shoes that his company produced and which he left, by antonomasia, name, the “godillots”. He is also known for making sacks and hand bags.
Alexis was a contemporary of Louis Vuitton and first achieved fame in Paris for his beautiful handmade luggage just a few blocks away from Vuitton’s.
Born in Besançon in a modest family, Alexis Godillot had several trades. The events that followed the revolution of 1848, gave him the idea to create a company organizing public festivals. Under the Second Empire, he became the official organizer of the festivities. His company decorated the French cities that Napoleon III visited.

He opened tanneries in Saint-Ouen in the suburbs of Paris which then he became official supplier to the armies. In 1853, during the Crimean War, the factory produces saddles and shoes, but also tents. The French army Workshops were opened in 1860 at No. 52-54 rue de Rochechouart (Paris).
Alexis Godillot soon became mayor of Saint-Ouen and participated in the development of the seaside resort of Hyères
Posterity
The Godillots by Vincent van Gogh (Paris, 1886 ).
In France, the military boots take his name Godillots, and will designate the military shoes until the Second World War. We owe Alexis Godillot the differentiation between the right foot and the left foot accompanied by a curvature of the insole at the level of the arch for better walking comfort. We also owe to his name (patent filed in 1862) the impermeability between the sole and the shoe through an application of gutta-percha (adhesive gum and waterproof from the natural latex). Subsequently, the term Godillot will become a term of familiar language for big shoe name, but is now aged.
Alexis Godillot was appointed in 1857 Knight of the Legion of Honor.
A marble bust by Vital-Dubray was exhibited at the Salon of 1866 (No. 2748).
An avenue of Hyères bears his name
